Separate Tickets Policy

- This policy affects British Airways mainline, codeshare, franchises and wholly owned subsidiaries.
- It applies to all passengers travelling on separate tickets and not only during a delay or disruption.
- Passengers travelling on through tickets are not affected by this policy. Their baggage is through-checked to final destination and they continue to benefit from the most generous baggage allowance.
- British Airways must not through check any passengers or their bags holding an onward separate ticket sector on carriers other than British Airways, oneworld and codeshare partners.
- The baggage allowance should be considered for each ticket only. Therefore, regardless of the next or previous ticketed sector baggage allowance (even if BA-BA/oneworld/codeshares) excess baggage must be paid if the customer exceeds his/her allowance on each separate ticket sector flown.
Passengers holding separate tickets and how their baggage is being accepted, depending on the separate ticket type:
| BA to BA (i.e. BA operated, BA prefix, BA paper) |
Passengers and bags can be through-checked providing MCT (minimum connection times) are adhered to. |
| BA to oneworld member (i.e. oneworld carriers prefix, oneworld carriers paper and codeshare partners |
Passengers and bags can be through-checked providing MCT (minimum connection times) are adhered to. |
| BA to other carriers (except oneworld carrier and codeshare partners) |
Passengers and bags will only be checked to final BA destination. They will not be checked through to the final destination. |
The difference between a through ticket and a separate ticket:
| Baggage checked through to final destination |
Through check in for travel on BA to BA, BA to oneworld, and BA to codeshare partners only. To all other airlines, baggage is not checked through to final destination but only to the destination point on each separate ticket. |
| The most generous baggage allowance applies across all sectors |
Baggage allowance as per each ticket. Excess baggage is independently calculated for each ticket sector. |
| Online check-in in one transaction |
Online check-in separate transactions for each ticket. |
|
System offers the best connections respecting the MCT's |
Customer choose their own connecting point and time. |
| Booking completed in same transaction |
Separate bookings for each ticket. |
| Customers will be re-routed to final destination if they miss their onward connection |
Customers may not necessarily be re-routed if they miss their onward (separate ticket) connection, even if it is BA who has brought them in late. |
Separate ticket procedures:
|
All BA to BA flights
(BA ticket, BA prefix, BA paper) |
Yes
This means the pax & bags can be through-checked. Allowance must be calculated by individual baggage allowance per ticket. If excess charges apply, issue an MCO coupon for each applicable charge. |
Per sector
For example, on two separate BA tickets: EDI-LHR & LHR-JFK, a passenger has 2 pieces weighing 50KG. The pax’s allowance is 1 pc on the EDI-LHR ticket and then 2 pcs on the LHR-JFK ticket. The pax will be charged the 1 pc excess charge for the EDI-LHR sector only. |
|
All BA to OW flights
(oneworld carrier, oneworld prefix, oneworld papaer) including codeshare partner
|
Yes
Same as above |
Per sector
Two separate tickets: JFK BA LHR & LHR IB MAD, a passenger has 3 pcs weighing 70 KG. Allowance is 2 pcs on the JFK-LHR (BA) ticket and then 20 KG on the LHR-MAD (IB) ticket. The passenger will be charged 1 pcs for the JFK-LHR sector and 50KG excess for the LHR-MAD only. |
|
BA to Other Carriers (OC)
(except oneworld and codeshare partners) |
No
This means that pax will be checked in for the BA sector only, as well as bags. No through labelling of bags is permitted. Excess to be charged for the BA sector only |
BA Sector
On two separate tickets: EDI BA LHR & LHR UA JFK, a passenger has 2 pieces weighing 50 KG. The pax’s allowance is 1 pc on the EDI-LHR (BA) ticket and then 2 pcs on the LHR-JFK (UA) ticket. The passenger will be charged the 1 pc excess for the EDI-LHR only. Pax will then need to check-in at LHR with UA. |
