Free Cabin Baggage allowances

Customers travelling with British Airways, need to ensure that they are aware of the restrictions on their hand baggage, including:


Customers free size allowances:

The standard-sized bag is no more than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22ins x 18ins x 10ins), including the handle, pockets and wheels and for the second piece of laptop-sized bag – 45cm x 36cm x 20cm (18ins x 14ins x 8ins), including the handle, pockets and wheels. 

A 23kg (51lbs) maximum bag weight applies and you must be able to lift the bag into the overhead lockers in the aircraft cabin unaided.

The standard-sized bag must be able to be:

  • fitted into the gauge available in the check-in area
  • lifted into the aircraft's overhead lockers unaided (although cabin crew will assist customer if they have additional needs)


The laptop-sized bag must fit under the seat in front of your customer.

If your customers journey involves another airline, they should check the hand baggage allowance with that airline before travelling.
If your customers are travelling with one of our oneworld alliance partners, the hand baggage allowance may differ and ythey should also check this before travelling.


Musical instruments

Small musical instruments may be carried as hand baggage if they are under 126cm (50in), as part of your free hand baggage allowance.

Allowance for franchise airlines

Franchise airlines operate certain routes on behalf of British Airways, and baggage allowances vary when you travel with these other airlines.

On some routes these airlines operate small aircraft types which have limited cabin storage space, so you cannot always expect the same allowances as on larger aircraft.

If you are travelling on a flight operated by American Airlines, American Airlines’ allowance on hand baggage will apply. This may mean that your hand baggage will have to be checked in as hold baggage. In this case no charge for excess baggage would be applied.
